POETS CORNER @ PAGES CAFE ~ 17TH MAY 2008
OUR INVITED GUESTS: Andrew Burke is an Australian poet who has lived most of his life on the west coast in Perth. Born in Melbourne in 1944, Burke's family moved west to expand the family business eighteen months later. In his teens, Burke read Kerouac and Ginsberg and other 'Beat' writers, and they gained his interest more than the Hardy and company he was studying at school. He started to ape their style in all he wrote, and published his first short story at 18. He has written on a daily basis ever since - stories, plays, poems, and - to feed wife and children - ads and videos, annual reports and press releases. Since 1990, Burke has taught creative writing and allied subjects at universities and schools all over Western Australia, read and compared readings from Singapore to Wagga Wagga. Multi-published, multi-talented and multi-voiced, his HI SPIRTS blog is a most worthy read.
Annamaria Weldon has been a guest reader at [Poet's Corner], Voicebox, WoW, Scots and at OOTA events. Her forthcoming collection, “The Roof Milkers” to be published by Sunline Press in June (2008), spans three decades of poems and two homelands. After a childhood in North Africa, London and Guatemala, completing her education back in Malta and working there as a journalist, editor and emerging poet, she came to WA in 1984 and joined the West Australian newspaper. Her credits since include writing for the The Australia Council, publishing poems and short fiction in anthologies (OOTA’s November Light- 1999 and Tidelines- 2000; ) and journals (including Yellow Moon, Five Bells and Indigo Vols. 1 & 2) and winning both First and Second places in the 2007 Ena Taylor Poetry Award (Peter Cowan Writers Centre) 2007.
With her mentor Kevin Gillam at FAWWAs 2007 Poetry Masterclass, she developed her manuscript “The Roof Milkers” which will be featured at Poets Corner 19th July 2008.
Murray Jennings has worked at a range of jobs including storeman, postman, clerk, salesman and editor's assistant. He has also been involve in radio broadcasting for many years. He worked as an ABC announcer in Perth and the Kimberleys and later became the Head of the Broadcasting Department of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts at Edith Cowan University. Jennings' poems and short stories have been published in a number of journals and anthologies around Australia and his radio plays have been broadcast on ABC Radio. After retiring from 11 years of teaching at WAAPA, Murray intends to explore his other talents. “I’m going to focus on writing for both print and radio, and also concentrate on painting and sculpturing,” he says. He’ll be reading from his book: “Flash company : poems and fictions / Murray Jennings.” Stone's Publishing, 2007.
Deanne Leber ~ A past host of Poets Corner, we welcome Deanne back as an invited reader. Born in Western Australia, she has had her work published in various journals, magazines and newspapers and is currently completing her PhD in Writing at Edith Cowan University. Deanne’s first collection of poems, “Book of Days”, is an autobiographical journey into the ways we remember. It is emotionally violent, humorous and playful. It traces lines of narrative, which have been disrupted by madness.

POETS CORNER Webpage Updates
Last Tuesday John Kinsella asked me to read one of my poems at his latest book launch - http://fremantlepress.blogspot.com/2008/04/book-launch-shades-of-sublime-beautiful.html As you can imagine, I was a bag of nerves reading with the illustrious John, Tracy Ryan and Dennis Haskell but it seems my poem went down OK. Even though it was very short, it packed a punch and seemed to encapsulate the themes of John's book very well. So thank you for the opportunity, John. I've recently updated a few of the pages regarding recent Poets Corner events - Jan to April... so if you have time or the inclination, click here: http://www.poetscornerwa.com/PoetsCornerJan08.html Tracy Ryan Book Launch http://www.poetscornerwa.com/PoetsCornerFeb08.html Vivienne Glance & the Slamming poets http://www.poetscornerwa.com/PoetsCornerMar08.html Afief Ismail - Sudenese poets & friends. http://www.poetscornerwa.com/PoetsCornerApr08.html Veronica Lake and her Primo Lux student poets.
