For those who aren't aware, we in Australia have just celebrated our 7th National Poetry Week, from the 29th August to the 7th September 2008 which has the same basic principals and aims behind the All-Ireland Poetry Day.
Poets from every level of experience and styles gathered together, all around Australia to support each other and share their words. It was wonderful!
The annual event has grown in participation, exposure and appreciation which in turn has enhanced and encouraged more opportunities for reading, publishing and work-shopping poetry.
National Poetry Week co-incided with WA Spring Poetry Festival whose guest in the West was ABC Poetic host and poet Mike Ladd. Poetry is alive and well in Western Australia particularly!
In 2003 I returned home to Perth, Western Australia after fourteen inspiring months in Midleton, Cork. During the WA Spring Poetry festival/National Poetry Week 2005, I held nine open reading events initiating Poets Corner @ Pages Cafe Since that time, I've continued to hold monthly open readings, usually with three well-known poets as invited guests.
In January, Poets Corner @ Pages Cafe hosted the launch of 'Scar Revision' by Tracy Ryan recently shortlisted as The Age 'Poetry Book of the Year'.
Her husband John Kinsella was also shortlisted with his book 'Shades of the Sublime and the Beautiful'. (I was honored to be invited to read my poem 'Desertification' at the UWA launch of John's book.)
As host and facilitator of Poets Corner @ Pages Cafe in the city, I've had the privilege of welcoming poets from all over the world.
